MSFHR Scholar Award

​​​Requirements, deadlines and procedures for the MSFHR Scholar Award.

The MSFHR Scholar Award is designed to attract and foster the development of outstanding health researchers in British Columbia. The intent of the program is to allow researchers to initiate an independent research career, build a leading research program and expand their potential to make significant contributions to their field of research. The Scholar Program achieves this through contributing a portion of the award recipients’ salaries.

MSFHR has launched the new 2017 Scholar Competition. ApplyNet is now accepting applications.

  1. For the MSFHR full application, the Dean's ApplyNet system account email is Please check with your UBC Department Head/School Director for their ApplyNet system account email address.
  2. Check with your Department/School for its internal deadline for the review of your MSFHR Scholar Award application. See below for a list of the required items.
  3. Your application package must be sent to the UBC Point Grey Dean's Office by December 7, 2016. You have the option of dropping off a paper copy to the attention of Bryan Wong, Grant Applications Officer (Woodward IRC Building, Room 317), or sending it via email to
  4. The UBC Dean and UBC Department Head/School Director will strive to submit their forms on ApplyNet by December 13, 2016. Do not submit the Department Head form on ApplyNet until you hear from Bryan Wong.
  5. Referees should also upload their reference letters by December 13, 2016; it will be the applicant's responsibility to coordinate with his/her referees.
  6. Submit your application on ApplyNet by 4:30pm on December 14, 2016.
  7. ORS will approve your application on ApplyNet for submission to MSFHR by 4:30pm on December 16, 2016.

Please remember that you can continue working on your research proposal up until you submit on ApplyNet on December 14, even after you have submitted your application package for review.

Required Documents

A complete application package consists of the following items:

  1. Research Project Information Form, signed by the UBC Department Head or School Director. UBC Centre Director signature is also required if the applicant will be using research space within a Centre.
  2. Request for Dean's Approval Form, signed by the UBC Department Head or School Director, and Centre Director if applicable.
  3. Pages 1-3 from MSFHR Full Application, including Contact Information page, Host Institution page, and Project Information page.
  4. Department Head form, signed by the UBC Department Head or School Director (please use template, see "Dean and Department Head Forms" section).
  5. Dean form, electronic version must be sent from UBC Department Head/School Director or his/her assistant to Bryan Wong (please use template, see "Dean and Department Head Forms" section).
  6. Sponsor letter, if applicable (see Sponsor Letter" section for details).

Dean and Department Head Forms

MSFHR requires the completion of the Dean and Department Head forms online to support each application. Applicants are asked to draft these two documents, and then send to their UBC Department Head and UBC Dean for review and approval. We highly recommend that Department/School administrators and HR staff are involved with the completion and review of these forms to ensure accuracy of the details provided within.

The Dean's Office reserves the right to request changes on these forms. Changes will be communicated to the applicant and Department/School if applicable. Bryan Wong will inform the UBC Department Head/School Director once the Dean's Office has approved these forms so that they can be submitted on ApplyNet.

Do not submit the Department Head form on ApplyNet until you hear from Bryan Wong.

Sponsor Letter

Partner and Clinical faculty applicants are required to obtain a letter from their employer to be included in the application package for Departmental and Faculty approval. This sponsor letter should address the following:

  1. Required - Confirmation of 75% of the applicant's time protected for research activities
  2. If applicable - Other responsibilities of the applicant (teaching, clinical service, administrative work, corporate involvement, etc.)
  3. If applicable - Applicant's contributions (current or potential contribution to the department and the host institution)
  4. If applicable - Available resources to the applicant (sources of salary support, infrastructure support, other start-up support)

MSFHR Scholar Award Faculty of Medicine Support

The Faculty of Medicine will be hosting 15-min Grant Development sessions. In addition, we will also host Procedural and Administrative sessions.

Grant Development and Procedural/Administrative Sessions

Dates: Tuesday, November 8, 2016 and Thursday, November 10, 2016
Locations: Point Grey and VGH – Rooms TBC
Time: Between 1:00 – 4:30pm, 15 minute time slots

We will provide feedback, answer questions on your proposal, clarify your program of research, suggest edits, and answer procedural/administrative questions.

Please bring as much of the completed application as possible to gain full benefit of your one-to-one meeting(s).

For resubmissions, please bring your MSFHR reviewer comments.
