Dr. Deborah Money appointed Head, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology

A message from Dermot Kelleher, Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Vice-President, Health.

Dr. Deborah Money

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Deborah Money as Head, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, effective to June 30, 2028.

Dr. Money is a professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and an associate member of the Department of Medicine and the School of Population and Public Health. She previously served as Executive Vice Dean, Faculty of Medicine, and was the inaugural Executive Director of the Women’s Health Research Institute (WHRI).

Dr. Money is an active clinician-scientist and runs a reproductive infectious diseases research program at WHRI. Her research interests include improving our understanding of the impact of HIV treatments in pregnancy and infancy, the role of the vaginal microbiome in health and disease, and the role of the HPV vaccine in the prevention of cervical cancer in women and girls living with HIV. In response to the pandemic, she launched three large pan-Canadian research programs to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on pregnant women, the seroprevalence of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 through antenatal blood samples and the effectiveness of vaccines in pregnancy.

In addition to her significant contributions to research and scientific exchange, Dr. Money established the first Fellowship in Reproductive Infectious Diseases in Canada, which has played a critical role in advancing the discipline and building a talented network of clinician-scientists across Canada.

In recognition of her achievements, Dr. Money has received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the YWCA Woman of Distinction Award, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Infectious Diseases Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and was recently inducted as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.

As Head, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Dr. Money will focus on advancing the Department as a national and global leader in reproductive health research, whilst cultivating partnerships and fostering excellence in education across all areas of obstetrics and gynaecology.

Dr. Money’s appointment follows the interim leadership of Dr. Gavin Stuart. I wish to thank Dr. Stuart for his significant contributions and dedication to supporting the Department in advancing women’s health through education, research and service over the past three years.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Money on her appointment.
