A message from Dermot Kelleher, Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Vice-President, Health, UBC.
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Peter Black has been appointed Head, Department of Urologic Sciences effective to June 30, 2030.
Dr. Peter Black is a professor in the Department of Urologic Sciences and Director of the Vancouver Prostate Centre. He also holds the Khosrowshahi Family Chair in Bladder Cancer Research and the Stephen Jarislowsky Chair in Urologic Sciences. An internationally-recognized authority in bladder cancer care and research, his translational research program is focused on developing innovative therapeutic strategies for bladder cancer and understanding mechanisms of treatment resistance.

Dr. Black also serves as Chair of the Canadian Bladder Cancer Research Network, President of the International Bladder Cancer Network, and Vice President of Education for the Canadian Urological Association. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Société Internationale d’Urologie Journal.
In his role as Head, Department of Urologic Sciences, Dr. Black will enhance and foster collaboration between faculty across British Columbia, with the goal of ensuring the highest standard of urologic training and research to improve care for patients throughout the province. He will continue to build on UBC’s position as a leader in training the next generation of urologic leaders and surgeon–scientists, and will work with health system partners to further strengthen and expand translational and clinical research to advance the field of urologic sciences provincially, nationally and internationally.
Dr. Black’s appointment follows the leadership of Dr. Martin Gleave, who held the role from 2015 to July 2025. Over the past decade, Dr. Gleave helped shape the department into a global leader in urology research and training — recognized for its excellence in publications, patents and grant funding. Under his leadership, the department became a quaternary referral center for complex urologic care across all subspecialties, earning full Royal College accreditation. Dr. Gleave also played an instrumental role in expanding the department’s research capacity and collaborations, including the recent establishment of the M.H. Mohseni Institute of Urologic Sciences. He has been recognized for his collaborative leadership and his deep commitment to the mission of the university and the department. I extend my sincere thanks to Dr. Gleave for his vision, dedication and the lasting impact he has made on the department and the broader urologic community.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Black on his appointment.
