A message from Dermot Kelleher, Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Vice-President, Health.
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Ravi Sidhu has been appointed Vice Dean, Education, effective September 1, 2025 to June 30, 2030.
Dr. Sidhu is an associate professor in the Department of Surgery and a practising vascular surgeon at St. Paul’s Hospital. He has dedicated his professional and academic career to education — most recently serving for nine years as the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME). In this role, he implemented institutional quality improvement activities, led PGME through accreditation, oversaw the implementation of competency-based medical education, guided learners and programs through the pandemic, and provided inclusive support and direction, all while continuing to expand and distribute residency programs throughout the province of British Columbia.

Dr. Sidhu has been recognized nationally and internationally for his dedication to education and surgery and is the recipient of multiple awards, including the James IV Travelling Surgical Fellowship, the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) Educator Award, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) Program Director of the Year Award, and the Association for Surgical Education Teacher of the Year. He also serves in multiple leadership roles with the AFMC and RCPSC.
Guided by a deep sense of social and institutional accountability, Dr. Sidhu is excited to lead the Faculty’s education programs. In collaboration with government, academic and health partners, he is dedicated to driving innovation, strengthening and diversifying training and education programs, and supporting learners, faculty, clinical preceptors and staff.
Dr. Sidhu’s appointment follows the leadership of Dr. Roger Wong, who served two terms as the Vice Dean, Education from July 2016. Together with his team and colleagues across the province, Dr. Wong led and collaborated with government and health partners to expand and distribute undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, as well as health professions programs in physical therapy, occupational therapy, midwifery, speech-language pathology, and genetic counselling. He supported the development of new approaches to how we teach and train, including strengthening and developing pathways for students from rural, remote, Indigenous and Black communities to pursue a career in medicine — all while fostering a culture grounded in respect, compassion and equity.
I wish to sincerely thank Dr. Wong for his steadfast and dedicated service to the Faculty of Medicine and the University of British Columbia over the past decade, and wish him well in his new chapter with Vancouver Coastal Health as Vice President, Medicine and Academic Affairs, beginning this September.
The search for a new Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education will begin imminently, led by the Office of the Vice Dean, Education. Details about the posting and application process will be added to the Careers page on the Faculty website shortly.
This message was sent to all faculty and staff in the Faculty of Medicine.
