A message from Ravi Sidhu, Vice Dean, Education.
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Sonia Butterworth as Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME), effective to December 14, 2030.
Dr. Butterworth is a clinical professor in the Department of Surgery, and has served as interim Associate Dean, PGME since September 2025. Prior to this, she held a number of leadership roles in medical education, most recently serving as Assistant Dean, PGME from 2019. In this role, Dr. Butterworth led continuous quality improvement initiatives both at the program and institutional levels, collaborating with the PGME Review Subcommittee and Accreditation team to implement improvements identified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the Faculty’s evaluation data.

Alongside her work as a pediatric surgeon at BC Children’s Hospital, Dr. Butterworth has served as Program Director for Pediatric Surgery and Surgical Foundations and Associate Program Director for General Surgery. She also played key roles in initiatives such as the International Pediatric Surgery Training Program for Ugandan surgeons, the Competencies in Resuscitation and Stabilization of Hospitalized patients curriculum, and the implementation of competency based medical education across multiple residency programs, supporting faculty development, change management and consistent competency-based assessment practices.
As Associate Dean, PGME, Dr. Butterworth will continue to provide strategic leadership and oversight for the quality, accreditation, innovation and learner experience across all postgraduate medical education training programs. She will advance excellence in clinical education, promote learner wellness and strengthen partnerships with health authorities to support high-quality training environments. Through collaborative engagements with health system and educational partners, she will help enrich the learning environment and prepare highly skilled, resilient physicians to serve communities across the province.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Sonia Butterworth to her new role.
