Supporting our community: An update from Dean Sharmila Anandasabapathy

A message from Sharmila Anandasabapathy, Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Vice-President, Health, UBC.

Dear colleagues,

We recognize that this is an extraordinarily difficult time for many in our community. Escalating conflicts and humanitarian crises around the world continue to create uncertainty, grief and deep concern. For some, this is deeply personal and immediate, affecting family and loved ones directly. For others, they add to the cumulative weight of witnessing suffering and instability globally. Whatever your circumstances, please know that the Faculty of Medicine has health and wellbeing supports available to learners, faculty and staff, as well as UBC Community supports.

We also know that members of our community hold diverse perspectives and lived experiences related to these events. As an academic community, we remain committed to fostering an environment grounded in respect, dignity and compassion. UBC’s Equity & Inclusion Office and the Faculty’s Office of Respectful Environments, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (REDI) offer information, services and resources for UBC community members interested in coming together to connect with others.

Although the world feels profoundly uncertain right now, I am continually grounded by the dedication and purpose that guide our work. The efforts of our faculty, learners and staff—advancing knowledge, improving health and health systems, supporting communities, and training future health professionals and researchers—matter deeply. At times it may feel that we cannot influence events unfolding on a global scale, yet our collective work contributes in real and meaningful ways to a healthier, safer and more just world.

Please take care of yourselves, check in on your peers and colleagues, and reach out if you need support. And take some reassurance in knowing that the work you do—individually and together—has impact, both here at home and far beyond.
