A message from Sharmila Anandasabapathy, Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Vice-President, Health, UBC and Paul Winwood, Regional Associate Dean, Northern B.C.
Our hearts weigh heavy in the wake of yesterday’s tragic event and unimaginable loss in Tumbler Ridge. We recognize that this tragedy has deeply affected many across the region, including members of our Faculty of Medicine community. With distributed training sites in Tumbler Ridge and the Northeast, we are closely connected to the people, partners and learners who live and work there.
We know this news may resonate strongly with those who have trained, taught or collaborated in the area, and with colleagues who maintain longstanding relationships within these communities. Our thoughts are with everyone who has been impacted, both locally and across our distributed programs.
The safety and wellbeing of our community is our highest priority. For anyone in need of support, please remember that the Faculty has health and wellbeing resources available to learners, faculty and staff, as well as a broad range of UBC Community supports. If you need additional support at your distributed site, please contact the office of your Regional Associate Dean.
Over the coming days, and in the weeks and months ahead, the Faculty will be working to identify needs and offer support to the community of Tumbler Ridge, our health partners, and our colleagues and learners in the region.
We wish to extend our sincere gratitude to the emergency personnel, especially the medical and health professionals within the Faculty of Medicine community, who responded to the tragedy and who are supporting the community.
During this difficult time, please take care of yourselves, check in on your peers and colleagues and reach out if you need support.
This message was sent to all faculty, staff and learners in the Faculty of Medicine.
