In Memoriam: Dr. Dana Devine

Dr. Dana Devine

Dr. Dana Devine passed away on November 12, 2024.

A distinguished leader in the field of transfusion medicine and blood research, Dr. Devine was a founding member of the UBC Centre for Blood Research, where she also previously served as Director. She was a current Professor and former Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, and an associate member in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology.

Dr. Devine’s research on blood platelets and coagulation, and the impacts these have on blood transfusion processing, was internationally recognized. She served in a variety of leadership roles, including Chief Scientist at Canadian Blood Services, and terms as President of the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies and the American Association of Blood Banks. She was inducted into the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences for her accomplishments in 2015.

Remembered by many for her role as a teacher and mentor, Canadian Blood Services announced the Dana Devine Award for early-career scientists in her honour in early 2024.
