Dr. Nelly Auersperg passed away on January 15, 2023.
A pioneer of gynecological cancer research, Dr. Auersperg was a professor emerita in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
Dr. Auersperg first joined UBC in 1968 as a researcher in the former Department of Anatomy, beginning her long and distinguished career researching cervical cancers. Her work was recognized through numerous awards, including being named a Terry Fox Cancer Research Scientist in 1985, Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine (UK) in 2008, and Lifetime Achievement Awards by the Society for In Vitro Biology (USA), the UBC Faculty of Medicine and the UBC Alumni Association, in 1997, 2007, and 2011 respectively.
In 2003, the Nelly Auersperg Award in Women’s Health Research was established at B.C. Women’s Hospital.
