Open educational resource (OER) grants

Faculty and staff at UBC Vancouver are invited to submit proposals for grants that support the use of open educational resources (OER) in UBC credit courses through the Open Educational Resource Fund.

OER are teaching and learning materials that are openly licensed to permit free access as well as adaptation and sharing. Since 2019, UBC has provided over $991,000 in OER grant funding for 96 projects across 12 Faculties or units via the two OER Fund grant pathways.

OER Affordability Grants

Grants of up to $25,000 for UBC Vancouver faculty who wish to incorporate open educational resources as the required materials into their credit courses. Apply by 3pm on January 16, 2025.

OER Rapid Innovation Grants

Grants of up to $2,000, available to UBC Vancouver faculty, staff and students for innovative activities that increase open educational resource development, awareness and capacity building. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the year’s funds are exhausted.

The Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT) will also hold ongoing drop-in consultation sessions to provide feedback and assistance to potential OER Fund applicants.

Research Facility Support Grants

Researchers, apply for funding to extend the useful life of shared research equipment at UBC Vancouver and affiliated hospital sites by Friday, November 1.

Offered by the Office of the Vice-President Research + Innovation, the Research Facility Support Grants (RFSG) provide funding for the operation, maintenance, replacement, repair or upgrade of equipment used in UBC facilities to support research. Apply for a one-year grant of up to $50,000.

Introducing the 75th anniversary signifier

UBC Faculty of Medicine 1950–2025: 75 years of excellence across British Columbia

2025 marks the 75-year anniversary of the Faculty of Medicine.

To commemorate this extraordinary milestone, an anniversary signifier (emblem) has been created to honour 75 years of excellence in medical education, research and healthcare innovation at UBC.

The signifier is available in a variety of formats and can be applied to a range of assets, including banners, memorabilia, letterheads — and even your email signature.

Before using the signifier, be sure to review the usage guidelines.

Further information on the Faculty’s anniversary celebrations will be announced in the coming months.

Don Rix Distinguished Keynote Address with Dr. Sam Aparicio

Join Genome BC’s 15th annual Don Rix Distinguished Keynote Address on Monday, November 18. Dr. Sam Aparicio (Pathology and Laboratory Medicine) will speak on “Decoding Cancer: How the Genomics Revolution changed the Path for Cancer Management”.

Between 2006 and 2012, there were dramatic technological advances in the sequencing speed, cost and interpretation of human genomes. This year’s keynote address will explore how these advancements revolutionized our understanding of how cancers begin, evolve and develop drug resistance. As a result, the development of cancer drugs has accelerated and we’ve created new ways to diagnose and manage cancers that were previously intractable. Dr. Aparicio will highlight British Columbia’s pivotal role in this scientific revolution and discuss ongoing challenges at the frontiers of cancer research.

UBCV fall cycling programs

If you cycle to UBC Vancouver, or want to start, explore three cycling programs aimed to promote cycling on campus and improve the experience of all cyclists in our community.

Bike Valet pilot

UBCV is piloting a Bike Valet service every Wednesday and Thursday, from September 18 to October 10. With the aim of improving safety for cyclists and their bikes, safe and secured bike parking will be offered 8 am–6 pm outside Koerner Library on Main Mall.

Try an E-bike program

Faculty, staff and students at UBC Vancouver can trial an e-bike free of charge for seven days, in partnership with Zygg. The program runs through to Thursday, October 31.

E-bike Subsidy program

In partnership with Zygg,UBC Vancouver faculty and staff can purchase, lease, rent-to-own and subscribe to Zygg e-bikes at discounted rates. This program is available until December 31, 2024.

Peer to Peer faculty development program

Register to join the Peer to Peer development program, a multi-session educational series for clinical teaching faculty offered by Faculty Development.

Through a series of sessions over the course of a year, the program explores core educational topics in an interactive and interprofessional small group context.

The next cohort of the program begins on Thursday, October 17.

Staff Mentoring Program: Call for mentors

Deadline extended: Participate in the Faculty of Medicine Staff Mentoring Program 2025 — apply to be a mentor by October 25.

The Staff Mentoring Program aims to connect staff, enhancing lifelong professional development through sharing of experiences and knowledge. Mentors can make a meaningful impact in the lives of colleagues and contribute to their personal and professional growth, while building connections across the Faculty and developing leadership skills.

The upcoming cohort of the program will run from January to December 2025, including a kick-off session and regular meetings with your mentee. No prior mentoring experience is required.

Universities and Human Flourishing in the 21st Century

Register to join UBC’s Green College on Wednesday, October 9 for a public lecture by President Benoit-Antoine Bacon on Universities and Human Flourishing in the 21st Century. 

In a rapidly changing world, what role should universities play in shaping our future as individuals and as a society? Dr. Bacon will offer an exploration of the evolving role of higher education and of the current impact of world-class universities, notably UBC, on our present and future. Dr. Bacon will then delve into the mental health crisis our society is facing, and how universities can play a critical role in turning the tide and creating a future where everyone can aspire to personal wellbeing.
