How long have you worked at the UBC Faculty of Medicine?

Two months. I’ve been with UBC for 11 years though, at the Sauder School of Business Executive Education.

Tell us what you do at the Faculty in one or two sentences:

I lead the Continuing Professional Development unit (CPD), where we create, deliver, accredit and evaluate lifelong learning for health professionals in B.C. and beyond. Our mission is to design and deliver exceptional learning opportunities that improve care and respond to emerging health needs.

What’s your favourite thing about your work?

I love working at the intersection of education and real-world application. I can see the positive impact that learning can have on individuals, organizations and communities firsthand. It’s especially meaningful in the health care space! I also love that our team and the work we do is so collaborative.

What’s one thing we might be surprised to learn about you?

Most people are surprised to learn that I have Chinese heritage. My mum is from Hong Kong.

Where is your favourite vacation spot, and why?

I love to be warm, so tropical beach vacations are my preference — Railay Bay in the south of Thailand is one of my favourites. It’s one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and it has a sentimental connection for me. I grew up in Thailand and have been going to Railay since the early ‘90s (before it got over-developed). And of course, the food is a huge bonus!

What do you do regularly to invest in your mental and/or physical health?

I make sure I get outside for a walk at some point every day, ideally several times a day — it’s so important to get a break from the computer screen! I also do hot yoga regularly and get into nature on hikes with my family.

What trait do you most admire in others?

The ability to find innovative solutions. Problem solving requires creativity and resourcefulness, and it’s something I’m lucky to see in the CPD team every day as we work with partners to address needs in the health community.

Respectful Environments Survey 2023

Shape the future of our working and learning environments by completing the Faculty of Medicine Respectful Environments Survey by Friday, June 30, 2023.

About the survey

Guided by the Faculty’s Strategic Plan Building the Future 2021–2026 and building on the work of the Dean’s Task Force on Respectful Environments, we have been working hard to uphold our commitment to foster more inclusive, respectful, and safe working and learning environments.

This survey follows from the initial survey conducted in 2020, which was implemented to understand our culture and to hold ourselves accountable for improving respectfulness and inclusivity in our working and learning environments for all learners, staff and faculty.

Since that time, the Faculty has initiated a number of actions and initiatives, including revising our processes for awards and recognition, strengthening our process to promote equity in hiring, and launching the Office of Respectful Environments, Diversity and Inclusion (REDI), which supports the Strategic Plan commitment to transform our culture.

As we continue our work to promote a culture of respect and professionalism across the Faculty, this survey aims to measure our progress and direct the work to come.

By taking this 15-minute survey, you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of our working and learning environments by helping us identify areas where we excel and areas where we can improve. Responses are anonymous and confidential.

Complete the survey by 4 pm on Friday, June 30, 2023.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Respectful Environments Survey about?

As a member of the Faculty of Medicine, the survey is an opportunity to share your experiences regarding your learning or working environment within the Faculty. The survey aims to measure the Faculty’s progress in fostering a more inclusive, respectful and safe environment since the launch of the Strategic Plan Building the Future 2021–2026 that builds on the work of the Dean’s Task Force on Respectful Environments.

The survey questions are tailored to faculty, staff, and learners, ensuring that the questions are relevant to your experience.

When is the survey open?

The Respectful Environments Survey is available from June 6 until 4 pm on June 30, 2023.

Why is the Faculty conducting the Respectful Environments Survey?

The Faculty of Medicine is committed to improving respectfulness and inclusivity within the working and learning environments for all of our learners, staff and faculty across the province. To uphold accountability, we continuously measure our progress to guide future efforts. The Respectful Environments Survey is one of the tools we use to evaluate the initiatives we have implemented to promote a culture of respect and professionalism in the Faculty.

Why am I being asked questions about my identity and affiliation if my responses are anonymous?

The questions about affiliation and identity help tailor the survey correctly to respondents from different categories such as faculty, staff, learners, or regional campuses. Additionally, this information will help in analyzing the experiences of individuals from diverse equity groups. For instance, it will allow us to understand whether perceptions of wellness support differ based on factors like Indigeneity or gender.

Reports will present findings by department or unit and/or identity group (e.g., gender, ethnicity) when there are at least 5 respondents within that particular unit or group. It is important to identify your department or unit in the survey to ensure that aggregated responses are correctly attributed to individual units, as a minimum of 5 responses (n>5) is necessary to generate a report. This is particularly important for smaller departments to ensure anonymity (see FAQ below).

When and how will the results be shared?

Key survey findings and recommendations will be shared online in Winter 2023/24. A survey report will also be shared with Faculty leadership teams. All departments and centres eligible for a unit-level report (n>5) will receive their reports before the end of February 2024.

How is my privacy being protected?

All individual survey feedback will be confidential and anonymous, and survey reports will only be generated if there are five or more respondents. The online survey will be hosted on servers in Canada. This practice complies with Canadian privacy laws.

Is it possible to identify and link my responses back to me?

No. Responses are anonymous and confidential. While overall results will be shared in the Faculty-wide report, unit-level reports will be generated only if five or more responses are received to ensure anonymity. Unit-level reports will be shared directly with the respective unit.

Who can I contact if I have questions or comments?

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact the Strategic Projects Management Team at fom.strategicplan@ubc.ca.

2023 Faculty Salary Increases

The Faculty Association and the University have agreed to wait for the conclusion of the ratification vote to start the 2023 increase process. This is so that if the membership votes to ratify the new agreement the increases can be processed in sequential order, which will ensure clarity and mean that they will not have to redo any increases. The 2022 GWI will be first followed by October 1, 2022, labor market salary adjustments, the 2023 1% lump sum, and then the 2023 increases.

It is anticipated that Faculty Relations will send out the increase spreadsheets in June. We will share the exact timeline for the increase spreadsheets as soon as it is available.
