UBCO Staff Awards of Excellence: Call for nominations

The Staff Awards of Excellence celebrate the contributions of individuals instrumental in helping UBC’s Okanagan campus achieve its strategic imperatives, and to contribute to the commitment to create an outstanding work environment.

All UBC Okanagan faculty, staff and students are invited to nominate staff for the below awards by 4pm on May 31, 2023.

Award categories

There are seven categories of awards. Up to five awards per year are offered in the following categories:

Dr. Amy Salmon appointed Director, Clinical Faculty Affairs

Dr. Amy Salmon

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Amy Salmon as Director, Clinical Faculty Affairs, for a three-year term effective to March 31, 2026.

Dr. Salmon is a clinical associate professor in the School of Population and Public Health and the Associate Director of the Centre for Health Evaluation & Outcome Sciences (CHÉOS). She also serves as the FLEX Site Co-Director for the Vancouver-Fraser Medical Program.

As Director, Clinical Faculty Affairs, Dr. Salmon will provide leadership to promote clinical faculty development and initiatives in teaching and scholarly activity, educational leadership and research. With more than 10,000 clinical faculty across B.C., this position encourages participation of clinical faculty in the activities of the Faculty, its departments and programs throughout the province.

Dr. Salmon’s appointment follows the leadership of Ms. Alexis Davis. We would like to sincerely thank Ms. Davis for her outstanding contributions and leadership in the role.

Dr. Ravinder Dennis Bhui appointed Associate Director, Clinical Faculty Affairs

Dr. Ravinder Dennis Bhui

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Ravinder Dennis Bhui has been appointed to the new role of Associate Director, Clinical Faculty Affairs, for a three-year term effective to March 31, 2026.

Dr. Bhui is a clinical instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences. An ophthalmologist specializing in retinal surgery, he also serves as Chief of Surgery at Burnaby Hospital.

In this newly created role, Dr. Bhui will support the Director, Clinical Faculty Affairs, promoting clinical faculty engagement and participation and acting as a liaison for clinical faculty members across the province.

Sustainability Education Grants

The Sustainability Education Grant program provides funding for Vancouver faculty members looking to advance and diversify sustainability education opportunities for students across campus in all disciplines.

If you have a great idea for a new course or program (or would like to update a current one) that uses applied, experiential and/or interdisciplinary approaches to learning, submit an application by May 14, 2023.

Through this program, you can:

  • Access funding of up to $20,000 over two years to develop new curriculum.
  • Collaborate with your peers to work on shared curriculum goals.
  • Become a Sustainability Fellow and build your network among like-minded faculty.
  • Get help to promote your new courses or programs across campus.

Faculty & Staff Sports Day is back this year and will be held in-person at UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan on May 5.

Instructional Skills Workshop for Faculty (hybrid)

This workshop series is designed for faculty or postdoctoral fellows who are new to teaching, and those who wish to refresh and enhance their skills.

Program for Open Scholarship and Education (online)

Running May–July 2023, this 3-month flexible and blended program helps participants develop an understanding of open scholarship in higher education and the intersections of each area: Open access, education, data and research.

Register by May 1, 2023.

Course Design Intensive (online)

This 3-day intensive program helps participants work, individually and collaboratively, to design or re-design a course they will be offering in September or later.

Register by June 5, 2023.

Teaching Development Program for New Faculty (multi-access)

This cohort program, running August 2023 to April 2024, supports faculty members across UBC campuses in their professional growth as teachers.

Applications open April 25, 2023.

Run a Global Seminar & take your course abroad

UBC faculty are invited to put in proposals to lead a Global Seminar of their making in summer or Reading Week 2024. Propose a new seminar by June 30, 2023.

Global Seminars, led by UBC faculty and supported by Go Global, give UBC students the opportunity to dive deeply into a topic with a UBC professor in context-rich locations around the world.

There are new funding opportunities available this year, including a faculty travel grant for program and partnership development; subsidies for new programs in the first year to lower the costs for students; and grants promoting inclusion of students with disabilities in Global Seminars.

2023 Faculty of Medicine Awards, Celebrating an extraordinary group of people

Nominations are now open for the 2023 Faculty of Medicine Awards.

The awards acknowledge outstanding faculty and staff members who demonstrate exceptional contributions to the Faculty of Medicine, and who are dedicated to advancing the Faculty’s values and vision of transforming health for everyone.

Please review the awards and nominations guidelines carefully and submit your nominations by Friday, June 9, 2023.

Recipients will be announced this summer, and the awards will be presented at the annual reception in the fall.
