Overview

The Faculty of Medicine (FoM) is pleased to announce a competition for up to four Tier 1 and up to three Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs (CRCs). This opportunity is open to FoM Departments and Schools, with Centres and Institutes encouraged to participate as partners where appropriate.

Applications may be submitted through two streams: the Internal Stream and the External Stream. Both streams welcome proposals from all fields of research that align with the FoM strategic plan.

In accordance with the Canada Research Chair Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Action Plan, this competition is open only to individuals who self-identify as people with disabilities, Indigenous people, racialized people, women, or individuals from minoritized gender identity groups. Notably, at least one Tier 1 Chair within the internal stream is dedicated to retaining a researcher with a disability.

Tier 1 Chairs

Tier 1 Chairs are prestigious seven-year positions, renewable once, intended for exceptional researchers who are internationally recognized as leaders in their fields. Applicants must hold, or be eligible to hold, a full-time, tenure stream appointment at the rank of Professor at UBC. Exceptional candidates at the rank of Associate Professor may also apply, provided they anticipate promotion to Professor within one to two years of taking up the Chair.

Tier 2 Chairs

Tier 2 Chairs are five-year positions, renewable once, designed to support exceptional emerging scholars who demonstrate the potential to lead in their fields. Applicants must hold, or be eligible to hold, a full-time, tenure stream appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor at UBC. Candidates more than 10 years removed from their highest degree may still be eligible for a Tier 2 Chair if they have experienced legitimate career interruptions (e.g., parental leave, health issues, or other circumstances as outlined in the program’s guidelines – see acceptable justifications).

This competition aligns with the goals of the Canada Research Chair Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Action Plan, which aims to remove barriers to the equitable participation of underrepresented groups. Applicants are encouraged to consult the Canada Research Chairs website for complete program information, including detailed eligibility criteria: www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca.

Number of Proposals per Department/School

Departments/Schools may submit a maximum number of proposals based on the number of tenure stream FTEs (including Tenure Track and Grant Tenure Track FTEs) within the Department/School:

  • Up to 30 tenure stream faculty members – up to 2 proposals
  • 31-50 tenure stream faculty members – up to 3 proposals
  • 51-70 tenure stream faculty members – up to 4 proposals
  • 71+ tenure stream faculty members – up to 5 proposals

Departments/Schools may submit Tier 1 and/or Tier 2 proposals for internal allocation and/or external recruitment of chairs. The proportion of internal/external chairs awarded through the competition will be determined by an adjudication committee based on the quality of the proposals and the alignment to the Faculty of Medicine’s strategic priorities.

Additional Proposals for Researchers with Disabilities

In alignment with UBC’s efforts to increase the representation of researchers with disabilities in the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) Program, Departments/Schools may submit additional internal applications beyond the standard maximum allocation specifically for researchers with disabilities. These additional proposals aim to foster inclusivity, enhance representation, and acknowledge the significant contributions of researchers with disabilities.

Step 1 – Department/School Financial Validation & Approval Process

To determine the type and number of applications (internal vs. external) and the appropriate Tier (Tier 1 or Tier 2), Departments/Schools must first complete financial validation. This ensures a clear understanding of financial capacity before moving forward with internal consultations and application submissions.

Process:

  • Financial Planner Preparation:
    • Departments/Schools must consult with their Finance Manager to prepare a financial planner for each potential application, assessing:
      1. Chairholder’s salary (including Tier 1 vs. Tier 2 costs).
      1. Research support funding.
      1. Any delta during the CRC term.
      1. Long-term salary commitment after the CRC term concludes.
  • Validation and Recommendation:
    • The Director, Academic Finance, FoM, will evaluate the completed financial planner to assess the unit’s financial capacity and provide a recommendation on whether the application can proceed.
    • Please send the 2025 FoM CRC Validation Form to Allison Kim, Director, Academic Finance, FoM, along with the completed Financial Planner for final validation and recommendation.

Important:

  • Units are limited to a maximum number of applications based on their tenure-stream faculty FTEs.
  • Financial validation for all applications must be completed by February 19, 2025, to ensure progression to the internal consultation stage.
  • No applications will be accepted without formal validation of financial capacity.

Step 2 – Department/School Internal Consultation/Adjudication Process & Expression of Intent (EOI)

After receiving financial validation and approval, Departments/Schools must conduct a unit-wide internal consultation and adjudication process to finalize their submissions.

Purpose:
This step ensures applications are aligned with the unit’s strategic priorities, equity and inclusion goals, and financial capacity, while adhering to competition limits.

  • Representational Gaps and EDI Goals:
    1. Identify opportunities to enhance equity, diversity, and inclusion in alignment with UBC’s priorities and CRC Program requirements.
  • Strategic Alignment:
    1. Confirm research areas align with the strategic plans of the Department/School, Faculty of Medicine, and UBC’s interdisciplinary research goals.
  • Tier and Type of Applications:
    1. Determine the appropriate Tier (1 or 2) for each Chair.
    1. Differentiate between:
      1. Internal applications: Allocated to current UBC tenure-stream faculty.
      1. External applications: For recruiting new chairholders.
  • Proposal Limit Compliance:
    1. Finalize the number of applications to be submitted, ensuring adherence to the maximum allowed based on tenure-stream FTEs.
  • Expression of Intent (EOI):
    1. Submit an EOI to the Office of Research by March 13, 2025, summarizing:
      1. Proposed applications.Strategic alignment.
      1. Representational gaps and EDI considerations.

*Note: Only current full-time, tenure-stream UBC faculty are eligible to apply for internal chair positions.

FoM Application Process for External Recruitment of Chairs

FoM Application Process for External Recruitment of Chairs

Last updated: January 24, 2025

Full application due April 24, 2025

Eligibility Criteria & Application Process

To be eligible for external CRC applications, Departments and Schools must first complete the financial validation process. This begins with consulting their Finance Manager, who will prepare a financial planner assessing the unit’s ability to support the prospective recruit’s salary, including any delta during the CRC term and full salary commitments after the term concludes.

The validated financial planner, along with the 2025 FoM CRC Validation Form, must then be submitted to Allison Kim, Director, Academic Finance, FoM, who will evaluate the unit’s financial capacity and provide a recommendation on whether the unit can proceed with an external chair application. Once the financial validation is completed, Departments and Schools must email Corné du Plessis, Strategic Programs Officer in the Faculty of Medicine Office of Research, with the validated financial planner and the recommendation from the Director, Academic Finance.

Upon receiving these documents, Corné will share the external proposal template and provide instructions for the next steps. Only Departments and Schools that have completed this validation process and received the necessary approvals will be permitted to submit external application packages to the Office of Research.

Additionally, Departments/Schools are urged to promptly fill out the 2025 CRC Space Plan template [Space Plan Template Link] to prevent potential delays in securing space planning approval.

Submission Deadline

Complete external application packages must be submitted via email to Corné du Plessis in the Faculty of Medicine’s Office of Research by no later than 11:59AM on April 24, 2025. Be sure to obtain a confirmation email to verify that your application package has been successfully received.

Post-Competition Process

Internal Chairs

Successful internal applicants are expected to submit a nomination application to CRC Program in the Fall 2025 CRC national competition.

External Chairs

Successful external proposals will be granted 12 months to advertise and fill the chair and must also adhere to the CRC recruiting and advertising requirements for nominating chairholders. Failure to meet these requirements will result in chair allocations to be reassigned by the Dean’s office. At this stage, the usual recruitment process for hiring full-time tenure stream Faculty members will be followed. Please consult with the Faculty Affairs team for assistance with completing the full FoM Recruitment Planner, preparing the draft ad, and obtaining the necessary approvals for posting. Please note if the position(s) are not filled within 12 months, the chair(s) will return back to the Faculty. This period may be extended in exceptional circumstances, although Departments/Schools are required to make a case for extensions. The Faculty Affairs team will work with you on such requests if required.

Moreover, in order to ensure that Departments/Schools comply with the commitments in their proposal, the Faculty reserves the right to participate on the search and nomination committee. It is important to highlight that only the four federally designated groups (people with disabilities, Indigenous people, racialized people, women, and people from minoritized gender identity groups) will be eligible to apply.
