What is FLEX?

FLEX (Flexible Enhanced Learning) is a series of courses that offer medical undergraduate students unique opportunities to pursue a variety of scholarly activities in Year 1, 2 and 4 of the renewed curriculum.  In FLEX, students develop and pursue activities that allow them to explore individual learning interests in greater depth.

FLEX activities can take place in academic settings or communities anywhere in British Columbia, Canada or the world.

Course Content and Structure

FLEX begins with a series of Foundation of Scholarship (FoS) modules, large and small group sessions in Year 1. FoS promotes scholarly inquiry by providing students with a toolbox of skills including: introductions to different types of scholarly activities, principles for communication facilitation, and engaging with communities.

The UBC undergraduate medical curriculum provides time for FLEX activities on Monday afternoons throughout Year 1 and 2 (called longitudinal half-days), and during dedicated weeks (called block time where students work full-time in FLEX) in Year 1, 2 and 4.

Assessment and Grading

All students within the MDUP are graded on a pass/fail basis. Students must pass each assessment component independently; passing one assessment component cannot offset failure in another. FLEX Advisors and Activity Supervisors play a key role in the assessment of students by providing formative and summative feedback in the domains of Scholarship, Communication, Collaboration and Professionalism.
