Dr. Laura Farrell appointed Regional Associate Dean, Vancouver Island, UBC & Academic Director, UBC Distributed Programs, UVic

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Laura Farrell has been appointed as Regional Associate Dean, Vancouver Island, UBC Faculty of Medicine and Academic Director, Vancouver Island, UBC Distributed Programs, University of Victoria, effective September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2029.

Dr. Farrell is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Medicine and a scholar at the Centre for Health Education Scholarship. She has held a variety of integral roles within the Faculty, serving as Assistant Dean of the Island Medical Program (IMP), and most recently, as Associate Dean, Student Affairs for the MD Undergraduate Program. As Associate Dean, she led the advancement of programming and support provided by the MD Student Affairs Office, including the introduction of embedded counsellors to support the strengthening of the services students receive for career advising and career planning.

As a Master Teacher in the IMP for 10 years, Dr. Farrell has taught across the undergraduate medical education curriculum. In recognition of her contributions and excellence in teaching, she was awarded the Faculty of Medicine’s Clinical Faculty Award for Excellence in Community Practice Teaching.

In her role as Regional Associate Dean, Vancouver Island, Dr. Farrell will provide strategic leadership to ensure outstanding delivery of undergraduate medical education on Vancouver Island, and support the integration of UBC distributed postgraduate residency programs, health professions programs and research on the Island. In alignment with the strategic plans and goals of the Faculty of Medicine and UBC, and working in close partnership with the University of Victoria and Island Health Authority, Dr. Farrell will continue to cultivate a supportive and thriving medical and health education and research community across Vancouver Island.

With the appointment of Dr. Farrell, we would like to take a moment to graciously thank Dr. Bruce Wright for his extraordinary service and leadership over the last decade. His commitment to excellence, unwavering dedication and visionary guidance have been instrumental in shaping medical education and research on Vancouver Island.
