Overview

The Faculty of Medicine (FoM) invites applications for up to one Tier 1 and up to six Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs (CRCs) in any field of research aligned to the FoM strategic plan. This competition is open to FoM Departments/Schools with Centres/Institutes as partners, as appropriate.

Tier 1 Chairs are seven-year positions, renewable once, intended for experienced researchers who are world leaders in their fields. Applicants must hold or be eligible to hold a full-time, tenure stream appointment at the rank of Professor at UBC, though applicants at the rank of Associate Professor are also eligible if they anticipate being promoted to Professor within one or two years of taking up the Chair.

Tier 2 Chairs are five-year positions, renewable once. They are intended for exceptional emerging scholars who have the potential to lead in their fields. Applicants must hold or be eligible to hold a full-time, tenure stream appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor at UBC. Note: A scholar who is more than 10 years from their highest degree at the time of nomination may be nominated for a Tier 2 Chair only if they have experienced legitimate career interruptions (see acceptable justifications).
The Canada Research Chair Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Action Plan guides the University’s efforts to remove barriers to equitable participation of people with disabilities, Indigenous people, racialized people, women, and people from minoritized gender identity groups. Please consult the Canada Research Chairs website for full program information, including further details on eligibility criteria: www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca.

Number of Proposals per Department/School:

Departments/Schools may submit a maximum number of proposals based on the number of tenure stream FTEs (including Tenure Track and Grant Tenure Track FTEs) within the Department/School:

  • Up to 30 tenure stream faculty members – up to 2 proposals
  • 31-50 tenure stream faculty members – up to 3 proposals
  • 51-70 tenure stream faculty members – up to 4 proposals
  • 71-90 tenure stream faculty members – up to 5 proposals
  • 91+ tenure stream faculty members – up to 6 proposals

Departments/Schools may submit proposals for internal allocation and/or external recruitment of chairs. The proportion of internal/external chairs will be determined by an adjudication committee based on the quality of the proposals and the alignment to the Faculty of Medicine’s strategic priorities.

Department/School Consultation and Adjudication Process

Before initiating the application process, Departments/Schools are required to go through a department/school-wide consultation and adjudication process. It is recommended that this step is completed by no later than January 23, 2023.

The purpose of the internal consultation and adjudication process is for the Department/School to consult within their unit to identify:

  1. greatest chairholder representational gaps/goals and opportunities to enhance equity and inclusive excellence, in accordance with UBC’s strategic priorities and requirements of the CRC Program;
  2. intended research area(s) that are aligned with the strategic plan of both the Department/School and the Faculty of Medicine, with consideration of the university’s strategic priority to advance interdisciplinary and inclusive research;
  3. in which Tier (Tier 1, Tier 2 or both);
  4. determine applications for internal allocation of chairs* and/or external recruitment of chairs;
  5. determine the number of proposals to be submitted to the FoM competition;
  6. determine high level financial viability of supporting a CRC long term.

*Note: only current full time, tenure stream UBC faculty are eligible to apply for internal chair positions.

During the departmental/school adjudication process, Departments/Schools are required to conduct an open and transparent process to identify candidate of choice according to the Canada Research Chairs Program (CRCP) guidelines for recruiting and nominating CRCs. The review of applications and interviews must be completed before Departments/Schools can submit their internal chair proposals at the application stage.

Application Process

Please use one of the following links outlining the appropriate application process:

FoM Application Process for Internal Allocation of Chairs

FoM Application Process for External Recruitment of Chairs

Post-Competition Process

Internal Chairs

Successful internal applicants are expected to submit a nomination application to CRC Program in the October 2023 CRC national competition.

External Chairs

Successful external proposals will be granted 12 months to advertise and fill the chair and must also adhere to the CRC recruiting and advertising requirements for nominating chairholders. Failure to meet these requirements will result in chair allocations to be reassigned by the Dean’s office. At this stage, the usual recruitment process for hiring full-time tenure stream Faculty members will be followed. Please consult with the Faculty Affairs team for assistance with completing the full FoM Recruitment Planner, preparing the draft ad, and obtaining the necessary approvals for posting. Please note if the position(s) are not filled within 12 months, the chair(s) will return back to the Faculty. This period may be extended in exceptional circumstances, although Departments/Schools are required to make a case for extensions. Faculty Affairs team will work with you on such requests if required.

Moreover, in order to ensure that Departments/Schools comply with the commitments in their proposal, the Faculty reserves the right to participate the search and nomination committee.

It is important to highlight that only the four federally designated groups (people with disabilities, Indigenous people, racialized people, women, and people from minoritized gender identity groups) will be eligible to apply.

CHSPR 35th Annual Health Policy Conference: Value Judgements

Join the Centre for Health Services and Policy Research for Value Judgements: Focusing on Patients’ Health and Health Care Outcomes.

Date: March 9-10, 2023

Location: Pinnacle Hotel Vancouver Harbourfront

The movement to increase value from health care is gaining momentum and related initiatives are flourishing. For many, value from health care means measuring patients’ health relative to the costs incurred to achieve their outcomes. However, this concept over-simplifies the complex processes of generating or maintaining health. Focusing on patients’ health and health care outcomes means improving access and quality of care, appropriately targeting interventions, and understanding the effects of health inequities, social determinants of health, and systems of health care delivery. The 2023 Centre for Health Services and Policy Research (CHSPR) Health Policy Conference will explore these different lenses of measuring value.

CHSPR’s long-standing conference promotes discussion between policy-makers, academics, providers, patients and national organizations on timely issues shaping health systems in Canada. Over 1.5 days at the Pinnacle Hotel Vancouver Harbourfront, the 2023 conference will bring together research and policy experts, students, patients, and care practitioners from across the health care system.

Canada Research Chairs

The Canada Research Chairs Program provides the Faculty of Medicine with opportunities to nominate outstanding researchers in areas that further our strategic plan.
