Evolving societal needs, advances in technology and the emergence of new distributed and flexible learning opportunities continue to shape our approach to teaching the next generation of health care professionals and scientists.
In 2017, the Faculty of Medicine will take an important step towards honouring its commitment to educational program renewal and realignment, set out in the new Strategic Plan: Building the Future.
Under the leadership of Dr. Bruce Forster, who was recently appointed Academic Director, Education Innovation, the Faculty will establish the Office of Education Innovation (OEI).
"Given the evolving need for new learning models and flexible educational pathways that exploit innovation and technology, the OEI will play a critical role in supporting new program development within the Faculty," says Dr. Forster, who will continue to serve in his current position as Head, Department of Radiology.
Once established, the OEI will oversee the development of all new academic programs within the Faculty, with a focus on supporting the emergence of teaching initiatives that cover ground-breaking disciplines and deploy novel learning channels.
For those who have been at the forefront of spearheading the OEI, the appointment of Dr. Forster represents an important step.
"It's very rewarding to see early movement on the commitments that we made in the new strategic plan," says Dr. Roger Wong, Executive Associate Dean, Education. "We are committed to putting British Columbia at the forefront of health education innovation by delivering education that enhances healthcare in our province."
"Dr. Forster brings extensive leadership to this new role and I'm excited by the prospect of him working in collaboration with faculty and site leaders across the province to explore opportunities to leverage new technologies and practices to transform the impact and reach of our education programs."
More information regarding the establishment of the OEI will be available in early 2017.
