Governance renewal achieves a major milestone

To advance objective 3 of the organization pillar, we are renewing the Faculty of Medicine's governance committee structure. Over almost a year of consultations with people who work in the current structure, including committee chairs, we gathered information about what works and what doesn't work in the current structure. Based on those findings, we developed a renewed structure that was approved by Faculty Executive on September 26, 2017. Next, we will seek approval at Full Faculty in November and UBC Senate in December. If approved, we will begin transition to the renewed structure in early 2018.

Flowing from the University's bicameral structure with Senate and the Board of Governors, the renewed structure designed to support the full range of the Faculty of Medicine's functions has an academic side reporting to Full Faculty and an administrative side reporting to the Dean. The Department Heads and School Directors Committee plays a key role in both the academic and administrative sides of the structure.

Standing committees have the ability to determine their own subcommittee structures, so, if approved, one of the first orders of business for each new/renewed committee will be to define its subcommittee structure.
