Apply for a Move UBC Grant

Have an idea to get the UBC community moving, but need some funds to make it happen?

Grants of up to $1,500 are now available for UBC faculty, staff, students and community members planning projects or initiatives that support the wellbeing of our community by moving more.

Move UBC Grants have two funding streams available:

  • Small grants: Projects requesting quick-start funds under $200
  • Large grants: Projects requesting funds between $200–$1,500

Applications will be open year round until funds are fully allocated.

Submit your benefits claims before year-end deadlines

Get the most out of your benefits plan and submit claims before the year-end deadlines.

  • Extended Health: Submit outstanding 2023 claims by December 31, 2024.
  • Dental: Submit dental claims no later than one year from the date of service.
  • Health Spending Account: Eligible employee groups, submit 2024 HAS claims by March 31, 2025.

Cheque mailing disruption: Canada Post strike

UBC Finance advise faculty and staff to expect delays in mail delivery, including cheque delivery for payroll and suppliers, due to the ongoing Canada Post strike.

Employees who receive payment by cheque are being contacted directly with information on how to collect their payment.

A temporary process for suppliers is also in place, and faculty and staff who are fielding supplier questions about payment are encouraged to direct them to information on the UBC Finance website.

Japan Prize 2026: Call for nominations

Nominations are now open for the 2026 Japan Prize.

The Japan Prize honours scientists and researchers worldwide who are recognized for having contributed significantly to the peace and prosperity of humankind through their original and outstanding achievements that have greatly advanced the progress of science and technology.

Prize fields

For 2026, prizes will be awarded in two fields: Life Sciences; and Electronics, Informatics, and Communications.

The field of Life Sciences recognizes significant contributions to society through discoveries of previously unknown biological phenomena and through work elucidating regulatory mechanisms, as well as through technical innovations that promise a deeper understanding of living organisms’ functioning in nature.

The field of Electronics, Informatics, and Communications recognizes research that could lead to the creation of new industries and innovation of manufacturing technologies, aid in the evolution of information society, ensure societal safety and security, or promote the development of fundamental technologies and systems that contribute to improving quality of life.

Cross-Institutional Collaborations to Address the Unregulated Drug Crisis

Join UBC Health for an engaging online session on collaborative efforts in drug checking to address BC’s toxic drug crisis on November 26.

This panel discussion, part of the Health After 2020 program, will explore how researchers from UBC and the University of Victoria are innovating harm reduction through cross-institutional collaboration. Attendees will hear about the unique insights gained from technician training, community site work, and festival-based services, shedding light on how partnerships can enhance equity and improve healthcare interventions.

West Coast Teaching Excellence Awards

UBC is seeking nominations of faculty members or teaching teams to put forward for the West Coast Teaching Excellence Awards 2025. The awards celebrate excellence in teaching in colleges, institutes and universities in British Columbia and the Yukon.

UBC Vancouver will two nominees to put forward for this regional award. Nominations are open until 3 pm on Thursday, November 28, 2024.

Health Research BC Research Trainee program

Applications are now open for Michael Smith Health Research BC’s Research Trainee 2025 competition.

The program provides post-doctoral fellows or health professional researchers with salary support for dedicated research activities, allowing early-career researchers to focus on conducting high-quality, innovative research. Since 2001, more than 1,400 Research Trainee awards have helped develop, attract and retain the province’s best and brightest health researchers and support the advancement of world-class health research in B.C. 34 UBC trainees and postdoctoral fellows were awarded funding through the 2024 competition.

Submit a letter of intent by 4:30 pm on Thursday, December 12, 2024.

In Memoriam: Dr. Dana Devine

Dr. Dana Devine

Dr. Dana Devine passed away on November 12, 2024.

A distinguished leader in the field of transfusion medicine and blood research, Dr. Devine was a founding member of the UBC Centre for Blood Research, where she also previously served as Director. She was a current Professor and former Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, and an associate member in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology.

Dr. Devine’s research on blood platelets and coagulation, and the impacts these have on blood transfusion processing, was internationally recognized. She served in a variety of leadership roles, including Chief Scientist at Canadian Blood Services, and terms as President of the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies and the American Association of Blood Banks. She was inducted into the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences for her accomplishments in 2015.

Remembered by many for her role as a teacher and mentor, Canadian Blood Services announced the Dana Devine Award for early-career scientists in her honour in early 2024.
