Solutions Scholars Program
The Climate Solutions Research Collective is accepting project ideas for the 2025–2026 Solutions Scholars Program.
Established in 2023, the Solutions Scholar Program is designed to encourage interdisciplinary research in the areas of climate change mitigation, adaptation and education. The program supports graduate students to spend ten months working on a solutions-oriented research project submitted and led by researchers across UBC.
Researchers are invited to submit a Notice of Intent for their project proposal by Friday, February 28. Select projects will be invited to submit a full application in April.

Canada Excellence Research Chairs: Call for nominations
The 2026 Canada Excellence Research Chairs (CERC) competition has now launched, and the Faculty of Medicine Office of Research is seeking nominations from interested candidates.
The CERC program aims to support world-renowned researchers and their teams to establish ambitious research programs at Canadian universities. The Faculty of Medicine has been invited to submit up to three nominees. Nominees must be full professors or associate professors expected to be promoted to full professor within one or two years of the nomination.
Interested applicants must complete the registration form by 5 pm on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, with preliminary nominations due to the Faculty of Medicine Office of Research by March 19.
Celebrate Pink Shirt Day on Feb. 26
In the spirit of spreading kindness and advocating for those who need it, UBC invites faculty and staff to participate in Pink Shirt Day on Wednesday, February 26.
Now a global movement, Pink Shirt Day grew from an act of kindness in Nova Scotia when a group of students supported a fellow student being bullied for wearing a pink t-shirt to school.

Continuous Learning Advancement Fund
UBC Vancouver faculty, apply for funding to develop a non-credit learning opportunity through the Continuous Learning Advancement Fund.
The Continuous Learning Advancement Fund (CLAF) supports the creation, renewal and expansion of non-degree learning opportunities at UBC Vancouver. The fund accepts proposals for non-credit offerings, with preference to fully online, micro-credential, non-credit programs serving continuous learners seeking to change (reskill) or advance (upskill) their careers in high-demand sectors.
A total of $250,000 is available in funding for the 2025/26 CLAF cycle. Submit a letter of intent by May 8, 2025, with full applications due by July 24.

Dr. M-J Milloy appointed interim Director of Research, BC Centre on Substance Use
A message from Robert McMaster, Vice Dean, Research, Darryl Knight, Associate Dean, Research, Providence Research & Teresa Tsang, Associate Dean, Research, Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute.
We are pleased to announce that Dr. M-J Milloy has been appointed interim Director of Research at the British Columbia Centre on Substance Use (BCSSU), effective to June 30, 2026.
Dr. Milloy is an associate professor in the Department of Medicine and a research scientist at the BCCSU. He has served as UBC’s inaugural Canopy Growth Professor of Cannabis Science since 2019. Dr. Milloy leads novel observational and experimental research into the health impacts of cannabis regulations and the possible therapeutic applications of cannabinoids, particularly for people living with substance use disorders or at risk of overdose.

As interim Director of Research, BCCSU, Dr. Milloy will develop and implement the centre’s research strategy and cultivate a culture of research excellence, integrity and collaboration. He will promote equity, diversity and inclusion in the centre’s research activities, including helping to advance the Faculty’s reconciliation efforts and working to honour the health and wellbeing of Indigenous peoples. Additionally, he will work to enhance the BCCSU’s national and international reputation through impactful research.
In this role, Dr. Milloy follows Dr. Thomas Kerr, whose outstanding leadership helped establish the BCCSU as a global leader in substance use research and harm reduction. Under Dr. Kerr’s guidance, the centre achieved significant advancements in research and helped inform public health policy provincially and nationally. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Kerr for his contributions and dedication.

Dr. J9 Austin appointed Head, Department of Medical Genetics
A message from Dermot Kelleher, Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Vice-President, Health.
I am pleased to announce that Dr. J9 Austin has been appointed Head, Department of Medical Genetics, effective to June 30, 2030.
Dr. Austin is a professor in the Department of Medical Genetics and the Department of Psychiatry. Their research applies a justice-oriented approach to advancing personalized medicine to ensure diverse populations have access to the potential benefits of precision medicine. Dr. Austin has founded the world’s first specialist psychiatric genetic counselling service, and their work has been recognized through awards for teaching, leadership and research. They are also a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, and serve as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Genetic Counseling.

As Head, Department of Medical Genetics, Dr. Austin will develop and enact a strategic plan that fosters cohesion and belonging, working with colleagues to enhance the department’s national and international reputation for leadership in basic genomic science, clinical genomic research, genomic education and clinical service delivery. Dr. Austin will also work with colleagues and partners around the province to help move the implementation of genomic medicine forward for B.C. in an equitable and accessible way.
Dr. Austin’s appointment follows the leadership of Dr. Jan Friedman, who served as interim Head from September, 2022. I wish to thank Dr. Friedman for his significant contributions and dedication to supporting the Department in this role.

Dr. Hilary Grocott appointed Head, Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics
A message from Dermot Kelleher, Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Vice-President, Health.
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Hilary Grocott has been appointed Head, Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics, effective to June 30, 2030.
Dr. Grocott is a professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics. A world-renowned cardiothoracic anesthesiologist, his research is primarily focused on optimizing neurologic outcomes following cardiac surgery. Dr. Grocott has delivered nearly 250 invited lectures across six continents and previously served as Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia.

As Head, Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Dr. Grocott will provide strategic leadership to the department, helping foster excellence and innovation in education, research, and service. He also aims to enhance faculty engagement and build on the department’s existing strengths.
Dr. Grocott’s appointment follows from the leadership of Dr. Peter Choi, who served as interim Head from July, 2023. I wish to thank Dr. Choi for his exemplary service, leadership and contributions to the Faculty in this role.
