Inform the future of federal research support in Canada

Share your thoughts on the future of the federal research support system.

The Government of Canada has convened an advisory panel on the structure and governance of the federal research support system, and is seeking input from the research community.

The panel will provide independent expert policy advice to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry and the Minister of Health to ensure that federal support for Canada’s academic research enterprise is:

  • coordinated and cohesive, balancing respect for the needs of disciplinary communities with a holistic perspective across disciplines and across research, training, and associated infrastructure;
  • responsive to the multi- and inter-disciplinary, collaborative, and international approaches that are increasingly the hallmark of transformative research and innovation; and
  • sufficiently agile to seize new opportunities and address emerging research, economic and societal needs and interests.

The panel will review the structure and governance of research support, with particular focus on the relationships among the federal research granting agencies and the Canada Foundation for Innovation.

Share your thoughts via the questionnaire or written submission by December 1.

MedNet Modernization Initiative

About

MedNet is currently hosted on SharePoint 2013, a decade old platform. This initiative is an effort to “modernize” MedNet and move all content from SharePoint 2013 to modern collaboration and storage solutions available at UBC. MedNet is composed of multiple components which will be transitioned using a phased approach.

Phase 2: MedNet Public-Facing Sites transition

During this phase, the Office of Creative & Communications and Digital Solutions transitioned all public-facing MedNet content (mednet.med.ubc.ca) from SharePoint 2013 to WordPress, a UBC-supported content management system. The “new MedNet on WordPress” is mobile-compatible and has a refreshed and intuitive user experience.

  • This phase is complete. As of December 12, 2022, “the new MedNet on WordPress” launched

MedNet on WordPress Training Resources:

MedNet on WordPress Support Process:

Phase 1: MedNet Team Sites & Other Sites transition

During this phase, Digital Solutions supported users to transition content from MedNet Team Sites and Other Sites to alternative UBC Solutions including Microsoft TeamsMicrosoft OneDrive, and Qualtrics. MedNet Team Sites & Other Sites are CWL password protected sites where you can share and store documents and information.

  • This phase is complete. As of June 30, 2022, all MedNet Team Sites should have been transitioned to alternative UBC solutions.

How can UBC improve your experience getting to, from and around campus? Tell us through this short 10-minute survey.

Your feedback will guide transportation planning and infrastructure decisions to better support the development of more sustainable and equitable transportation systems.

Past surveys have resulted in improved walking, rolling, transit and cycling facilities; a campus-wide bike share program and a variety of sustainable transportation incentive programs and partnerships.

This survey is open to November 27, 2022. All completed surveys received by November 27 will be eligible for entry into a draw for over $1,000 worth of great prizes from TransLink, HOPR Bike Share, Evo Carshare, Zygg E-Bikes and UBC Parking.

Consideration of the reappointment of UBC Chancellor

A message from Ross Langford, Chair, Chancellor Reappointment Committee; Fred Withers, Chair, alumni UBC Board of Directors.

Please note: This message is sent on behalf of the UBC Alumni Association (alumni UBC).

The Honourable Steven Lewis Point was appointed UBC Chancellor in July 2020. As he approaches the end of his first three-year term, he is now being considered for reappointment.

Chancellor Point has served as chair of the convocation, conferred degrees granted by UBC and is a member, ex officio, of the Board of Governors, Vancouver Senate, Okanagan Senate, Council of Senates and the alumni UBC Board of Directors. The position is voluntary.

The Chancellor is the senior statesperson of the university and serves as the titular head. This role advocates for the vision of the university and plays an ambassadorial role in strengthening UBC’s relationship with key partners, alumni, and the community the university serves.

UBC’s progress on its commitments to equity and anti-racism

A message from Arig al Shaibah, Associate Vice-President, Equity & Inclusion.

In April this year, UBC’s Anti-Racism and Inclusive Excellence (ARIE) Task Force launched its final report containing 54 recommendations. You can read the report at antiracism.ubc.ca.

The ARIE Task Force report recommendations are complementary to several other important strategic documents that support UBC’s continuing efforts to advance Indigenous rights and reconciliation, equity, anti-racism and inclusive excellence commitments. Other planning documents include the Indigenous Strategic Plan, the Inclusion Action Plan, the Employment Equity Plan, and the forthcoming Dimensions Action Plan for equity, diversity, and inclusion in research.

Now that the ARIE Task Force has concluded its work, the ARIE Executive Co-Leads — the Vice-President, Students, and the Provost and Vice-President, Academic, UBC Okanagan — and the President’s Office will work closely with me to implement priorities. Dr. Jannik Eikenaar, Associate Provost, Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Anti-Racism, UBC Okanagan, has also been appointed to work closely with me to champion efforts at the Okanagan campus.

At this time, I would like to provide an update on the implementation work.

UBC’s Thrive is November 1-30, 2022

The word 'thrive' in blue capitals on a yellow background. In and around the letters are graphics of a diverse group of people moving, talking and resting

Thrive is a time when we come together as a UBC community to learn about, talk about, and explore ways to support our mental health. The last few years have brought unprecedented challenges and complexities that have impacted the mental health of our community, and now more than ever, it is important that we support one another in building positive mental health and creating opportunities for meaningful social connection.

Thrive is for everyone—we all have mental health, and while it might look and feel different for each of us, we all benefit from maintaining and fostering it.  Whatever your pathway to mental health may be, we invite you to learn about it, talk about it and explore it during Thrive.

Events

Ready to dive into Thrive? Check out the events throughout November to help support and maintain your mental health. See what’s happening on the 2022 Thrive events calendar.
