Salary Award Eligibility

An external salary award is defined as a competitive, peer-reviewed award that is offered by research institutes, provincial, national, or international agencies and is paid as salary to the awardee/faculty member. Applications for such awards are normally supported by the Faculty, are an important part of the planning process of the Faculty, and must be approved by the Department Head/School Director and the Dean. External salary awards, such as new investigator awards, from organizations including Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR), Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), as well as Canada Research Chairs, carry with them explicit understanding that the individual will devote 60-80% of their time to research which may impact their contribution to educational, administrative and clinical roles.

  • Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Professors in tenure track or grant tenure track appointments are eligible to apply for external salary awards.
  • Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Professors in partner or clinical appointments may be eligible to apply for external salary awards. Please contact Evelina Tolstykh to verify your eligibility.

For individuals who do not currently hold an eligible Faculty of Medicine appointment:

Department Heads/School Directors intending to submit applications for external salary awards (such as MSFHR, CIHR, etc.) on behalf of individuals who do NOT currently hold an eligible Faculty of Medicine (FoM) appointment must first identify the need for this position and will still be required to follow the FoM recruitment procedures for such appointments. If advertising or a request for a waiver of advertising is not possible prior to submitting an application for the external salary award, the Department Head/School Director will need to demonstrate the following:

  1. Departmental colleague support for the appointment (e.g. departmental standing committee vote); and
  2. Confirmed funding support for the salary outside of that provided by the award, benefit and salary increase costs, housing assistance, start up and, if stipulated by the award, provisions of funding beyond the end of the term of the award, using the Recruitment Planner.

The recruitment and advertisement process will be the same as for all other full-time stream faculty appointments (for current FoM procedures please visit the Hiring Faculty page).

For questions regarding recruitment and advertising, please contact your FoM Faculty Appointments and Recruitment Management team representative:

For individuals who currently hold an eligible Faculty of Medicine faculty appointment:

The Faculty of Medicine Research Office requires several documents for all salary award applications. You will also require a number of signatures in order to complete your application package. Please review the Signature Process and Required Documents sections of our website.
