Pidgin (Jabber)

Instant Messaging (IM) is a form of real-time, text-based communication between two or more people. Jabber, or Pidgin, is the IM service used in the Faculty of Medicine. A contact or “buddy” list allows you to instantly message your colleagues and set your availability status to online, busy, away, etc. An optional message can also accompany this status indicator to inform users of your location, or provide contact information (e.g., @UNBC 250-123-4567). Status indicators set expectations as to when a contact can reply to a message. IM is considered to be less intrusive than a phone call, but more immediate than an email.

IM is available to staff, faculty and researchers affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine.

Features & Benefits

Real-time communication

IM differs from ordinary e-mail in the immediacy of the message and also makes a continued exchange simpler than sending e-mails back and forth. IM is less intrusive than a phone call but more immediate than email.

Set status

Unlike email, a user’s status can be represented in the IM service to indicate if they are available, busy, away, or offline. An optional message can also accompany this status to indicate location, provide contact information, etc. Status indicators set expectations as to when a contact can reply to a message.

Application Process

To apply for an IM account, please contact the MedIT Service Desk with a brief description of how you plan on using the service, along with your contact information.

If your request is approved, a Service Desk representative will contact you when your account has been created.

Our IM service is available for staff, faculty and researchers affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine.

Support Availability

If users encounter issues using the IM program, they may call the MedIT Service Desk (1.877.266.0666) for remote assistance.

Note: The MedIT Service Desk may not be able to resolve all issues. IM uses software that relies on the means by which it is connected to the internet and the computer on which it is installed.

Also, the flexibility afforded by IM means that users will be in various locations where MedIT technicians cannot be dispatched. Furthermore, support can only be offered to users who have been provided a computer by their respective universities. The MedIT Service Desk is unable to support home computers.
