Postgraduate Medical Education Funding

Find guidelines and procedures for PGME funding.

UBC Faculty of Medicine, through the Office of the Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education administers Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) and offers Family Medicine and over 80 specialty and subspecialty programs recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

The program is supported by funds received from the Ministry of Health (MoH) which are allocated to the departments/divisions where residents receive teaching and training.

Funding Guidelines, Financial Audit and Reporting

Using prescribed funding formulas, the departments/divisions receive different types of funding, the spending of which is defined under the 2022-23 PGME Funding Guidelines.

If eligible, payments to clinical faculty members are governed by the Faculty of Medicine Clinical Faculty Compensation Terms. These terms are due to expire on June 30th, 2021.

To ensure PGME funds are spent in accordance with the guidelines all programs must complete the PGME Year End Financial Statement confirming that funds have been spent as per the guidelines and that appropriate backup documentation has been maintained for audit purposes. Review and approval by the Program Director and the Academic Finance Manager/Director is required. PGME accounts are also subject to reviews conducted randomly during the year.
